![]() ![]() Our attributes may be different and uniquely our own, but outside of perhaps body structure and size, most can be trained to some degree. Awareness, speed, power, line familiarization, footwork and movement, distance control, zoning, emotional control, rhythm, and broken rhythm all come to mind. These attributes go beyond technique, and make techniques functional against a resisting opponent when survival is at stake. In later years I have had the good fortune of training in seminars with first and second generation students to learn more about his art through their individual interpretation and expression. So often, martial arts are differentiated by techniques, but these Jeet Kune Do teachers also opened my eyes to how they personalized his techniques and concepts, and to the importance of attributes. I studied his writings and diagrams compiled in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, a book published after his passing which is rich with his insight and philosophy. He was so far ahead in his training methods, and even more importantly in uniting people. He also broke the stereotype of the Chinese people in the movies, and gave them a hero to look up to with cross-cultural international influence in Hong Kong and in America. The man I never met, but knew back in 1973 to be Kato in the Green Hornet TV show, has influenced my martial arts from the very beginning. I had the opportunity to meet his daughter Shannon a few years back, and to tell her how much her father has meant to me in my own learning.
